Sector Profile

Creativity is one of Jamaica's most distinct assets, and it has solidified the country's reputation as a cultural superpower. The island's success in this regard is clearly demonstrated in areas such as film, animation and music, which promote Jamaica's unique flair and inventive spirit to the world.

The creative industries (Film, Animation & Music) are those sectors that are born out of individual creativity, skill and talent and have the potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.

The creative sector is the third largest contributor to GDP, and has a significant multiplier effect on the Jamaican economy through seamless linkages with other industries such as tourism and manufacturing. Over the period 2011 to 2016, JAMPRO facilitated projects that created over 12,000 jobs for creative practitioners.

While music has traditionally been Jamaica’s most exportable creative product, the film and animation sectors are at various stages of their development, and demonstrate significant economic potential for the future.

Jamaica's diverse and rich culture is reflected in our reggae music, dance, theatre, art and craft, and cuisine, among other areas. Our colourful customs and traditions, as well as our vibrant heritage, continue to exert significant influence on the world.

The island is home to exceptionally talented musicians, fine and performing artists, and experienced film professionals.

Jamaica's rustic countryside, majestic mountain ranges, white and black sand beaches, secret coves, dramatic cliffs, mini-jungles and historic edifices have made the country an ideal location for filming and creative projects since the early 1900s.

The creative industries enjoy economic linkages to other industries such as tourism and manufacturing.
